“GALLERY 122 WEST” spearheads effort to help feed homeless children and pets

"GALLERY 122 WEST" in Arcadia issued a call today to area artists for donations to help feed homeless children and pets living in Charlotte and DeSoto counties.

"We'd like participating artists to create original works from material we'll provide," explained gallery owner Marc Washicheck. The artworks will be auctioned in late January or early February, with the proceeds being divided among Charlotte County Empty Bowls, Catholic Charities of DeSoto County and EARS Animal Rescue Sanctuary.

"We have old wood doors, window frames, desk and dresser drawers, pieces of metal and wood, spindles and molding for artists to incorporate into their artworks," said Washicheck, who has created an environmentally-responsible "green gallery" from recycled materials.

Charlotte County Empty Bowls provides assistance to some 276 homeless children scattered among Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Englewood and El Jobean. Empty Bowls works through the Charlotte County Public Schools Homeless Education Program, Charlotte County Homeless Coalition and Good Samaritans of Charlotte County. Some of these students are being cared for in domestic violence and runaway shelters, but others live in abandoned buildings and vehicles, in the woods, and in parks and tents.

The Homeless Coalition and Good Samaritans both operate food banks. The Homeless Coalition assists families who are in imminent danger of becoming homeless whereas Good Samaritans targets families who are in danger of having their utilities cut off.

Catholic Charities of DeSoto County works with people who formerly enjoyed a normal lifestyle but are homeless now due to job loss, uninsured medical emergency or mortgage foreclosure. They too operate a food pantry in addition to providing case management, financial assistance and after-school tutoring.

When people lose their livelihoods and homes, their pets are typically the first to suffer. Many go hungry and thousands are abandoned to live as best they can off the land. EARS Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) care-for-life or "no kill" sanctuary. Among its other services, EARS makes dog and cat food available to people who can no longer afford to feed or vaccinate their pets.

"GALLERY 122 WEST" has partnered in this charitable event with Cherry Hill Antiques, Sarasota Architectural Salvage and Zula's Antiques of Terra Ceia Island.

For more details or to volunteer to make and donate an original work of art for the auction, please contact Marc Washicheck at 863-993-2344.
