Gallery 122 West gives Fort Myers residents new reason to visit Arcadia

Written by Thomas Hall

Ft. Myers Galleries Examiner

For Fort Myers residents in the know, Arcadia is synonymous with antiquing. But now Fort Myers residents have another reason to make the hour trek north: fine art. On October 10th, “GALLERY 122 WEST” opened in the historic 100 year old Cherry Hill Building. Inside, an eclectic collection of Impressionist, realist, and abstract art and sculpture graces the sunny confines of the recently-renovated space.

“GALLERY 122 WEST” is a green gallery,” beams owner Marc Washicheck. Marc utilized a handful of inventive devices to provide resting and transition points so that each piece can be viewed independently. “We used recycled and reclaimed doors, shutters, fencing, and unpainted wood pedestals,” Marc explained. The architectural features, which were donated by Sarasota Architectural Salvage, enabled Marc to create a casual, “antiquey” viewing experience while simultaneously demonstrating his commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

In another earth-friendly move, the gallery does not employ a single gallery spotlight. The gallery is flooded with natural, organic light thanks to a large plate glass storefront window and a second story skylight. The absence of artificial lighting not only conserves energy and lowers operating costs, it allows collectors to better envision how the artwork will look in their own living rooms and dens.

While the U.S. Green Building Council would certainly give “GALLERY 122 WEST” its seal of approval on the gallery’s overall design, the artworks on display have attracted a steady stream of enthusiastic collectors and guests. “All of our artists are local,” Marc reports, with most hailing from Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Venice, Fort Myers and Arcadia.

Originally known as Tater Hill Bluff, present-day Arcadia, with its four-block, 24 shop, antique district, 58-block historic district, soaring oaks, southern Colonial-style homes, and now “GALLERY 122 WEST“, is a definite day-trip destination. Plus on the fourth Saturday of each month, up to two hundred more individual vendors descend on Oak Street creating an unparalleled outdoor Antique Fair where variety and economy are the watchwords.

“GALLERY 122 WEST” is located at 122 West Oak Street, Arcadia, FL 34266. You can reach owner Marc Washicheck at 863-993-2344 or online at, where you will find directions. For more information on Sarasota Architectural Salvage, go to
