This is a wonderful, very old, handmade Plantation Desk [we think that`s what it is] has a date inside of 1813. Has 3 letters ``gOD``. Everyone thinks this says God, but because of the small ``g`` it would mean they are initials. Back in the early 1800`s they would never disrespect God by spelling with a small ``G``. Also has some other letters, but they are very scrolly, and I can`t tell what they say. If your interested email me, and I can send more pictures.
It looks like it was painted at one time, then striped. There is old white paint in the cracks on some parts of hinges. Looks like hinges are hand made, still has some original ...I don`t know what to call them, they are not screws, but metal pegs that are melted, and pounded down. There are some old screws in some of them too.
The inside has a handmade piece that is shaped like an arrow, and would fit into lock. These also are attached by handmade pegs, but these have the tops coming threw the top, and are about 1/2`` diameter. Sides are dovetailed, and does have a brass plate where lock would be, but this isn`t as old as other hardware.
I have been told by a primitives dealer that this is a very fine primitive.
It is so neat the way it was handmade.
A real collectors item.

Great old metal 5 shade Chandelier with white paint which has lots of great nicks and scratches on the paint. The wonderfully shaped globes are cream color with removeable wire tops. The shaft of the Chandelier has 3 areas made of crystal. Works and plugs into outlet. Globes are in very good condition except of few tiny chips, but you can`t see them, they are at bottom under where light bulbs are.
This is an old Chandelier and looks wonderful when lit.

I'm hearing more and more about Carbon Footprinting on the news almost everyday. This is the term used for all the natural resources we use on a daily basis, which includes gas, electricity, water, trees, you name it. There are actually companies you can give money too who supposedly will give your money to another company that will help save the environment. There is a much easier way to slow down your Carbon Footprinting. BUY ANTIQUES. Antiques last for hundreds of years but new items won't. When you buy an antique you are cutting down on your Carbon Footprinting. For example; if you buy a one hundred year old table you can figure it will last another one hundred years which will save many, many trees. There will be less stain and varnish used to make all these tables which means less will end up in the water supply. Think of all the electricity and oil that won't have to be used to make all the new tables which only last 2 to 5 years, and would end up in the landfills. The list can go on and on. That's a lot of tables saved in a two hundred year period. If something would happen to your antique furniture and for whatever reason you can't refinish it you can always give it a new life by painting it. If your glassware breaks you can reuse it in a mosaic table which will keep the broken glass out of landfills. This is a very special, very different table. The apron is made from 8 inch wood which is made in an hourglass form with shelves on each end. I have never seen an hourglass apron before. Very unique. A must for any primitives home.

Beautiful china cabinet is a mahogany color and I think mahogany wood. I think it is but can`t say for sure but many of this period are mohagany. The door has very old curved glass which has bubbles and is very wavy. It is in excellent conditon and is a real find. The china cabinet has 3 shelves and the bottom and much detail including a top piece on back and two small carved pieces on front bottom of each side.

This piece is from my home and in great condition.

In this day and age where everything is made in China, and even Customer Service of many companies takes place in India, we want to see something warm and familiar. Nothing is more familiar than an antique dresser from your grandfather, a quilt from your mother, or a cross stitched pillow from your grandmother. These quality American antiques, which were made from 1700's to early 1900's, add warmth and love to a home China could never match.

Furniture from the early years of our country were handmade by parents, grandparents, other members of the family, or even friends, and literally included their blood, sweat and tears. Back when furniture was handmade, they were made for a person and or occasion, such as a crib for new infant, bed for a child, or a farm table for a newly married couple. Only half the United States had electricity in 1932 which was mostly cities, and this meant furniture was made by hand without any help from electricity. Nails were expensive and had to be purchased from a blacksmith until around the turn of the 19th century, so craftsman's spent hundreds of hours making dovetail. Old fashion American antique furniture was made out of real wood such as Black Walnut, Oak, Cherry, Chestnut, and Elm, some of which are extinct now. The majority of new furniture is made with fiber board and veneer, the wood grain is photographed on to the veneer so it won't last long, and doesn't have the warmth or depth as real wood has. Antique furniture has lasted over a hundred years and will last a hundred more without much care.

Sewing was also completed by hand with light from a candle or kerosene lamp. If the women didn't sew it, they didn't have it, and this included quilts, clothing, and bed linens. All little girls learned to sew at an early age and used this craft for the rest of her life.

Quilts were often made by quilting bee's and were always made to use, very seldom just for display. Cloth was expensive so most quilts of the time were made from scraps of old family clothing. Rugs were very often made by braiding scrapes of clothing too. Almost all handmade quilts have some tiny blood marks which are caused by quilters pricking their fingers. If you're lucky, you might find an antique quilt that is signed, dated by the quilters and even the name of who it was made for. Each quilt is a true work of art and is a one of a kind treasure.

Pillowcases and bed linens were also handmade by candlelight. They were made by mothers and grandmothers for the precious children's heads to rest upon. These wonderful women would spent hundreds of hours crocheting, cross stitching, or tatting to make these one of a kind gifts of love. If they didn't have these treasures for their beds they would have to sleep on flour or feed sacks.

Most clothing was also made by hand. In the later years clothing could be bought in stores but the cost was much too high for all but the upper class. Fabric was expensive so mothers would make one good dress for there daughters which would be worn for Church, and they would wear underwear and dresses made from flour sacks for everyday. Remember, even their towels were made from flour sacks. Of coarse every mother would try to embellish the plain cloth with cross stitch, tatting or even ruffles. Flour sack towels complete with hand embroidery are treasured today.

Glassware was one of the only items that was not made at home. Glass was still hand blown but in very hot factories, many without electricity. These factories used hazardous chemicals such as Cobalt, which was banned in the U.S. in the early 20th century. These factories used very hot molten glass which caused serious burns, and also caused many lung problems. Antique glassware or pottery are treasures because they have better deeper coloring, usually last longer due to the high quality, and they also have wonderful histories behind them. The color will wash off on much of the modern colored glass. Many of their relatives worked in these factories with horrible working conditions and generations later are still working in them. There are still some glass factories in business today such as Fenton, and conditions have gotten better.

Toys were mostly made by hand, with no electricity, power tools and many times no supplies. Fathers and grandfathers made toys with old scraps of wood, leather, cloth, metal, paint and love. There wasn't money to buy expensive wood, cloth or metal so they had to be very creative. My grandfather made me a little step stool in the shape of a duck with a top hat so I could reach the sink to wash my hands. My grandmother was furious since he cut up her good Maple table to make this stool, but that's all he had at the time. Today's toys are mostly all made out of plastic or are electronic, and just aren't the same. Many things purchased today are of the throw away society.

Each antique piece you have has a history of its own. Think of all the people, problems, special events and happy times your antiques has seen. If antiques could only talk. Remember, you never own antiques; you are just a caretaker who is adding your own history to that piece. Many people now are writing on back of furniture or on bottom of glassware etc, their history. Year received, why received, for whom and how much paid is the information to be preserved. There isn't anything made today that compares with the quality, value, patina, history and investment antiques have. These antiques were made when workers loved their craft, and worked with pride. Antiques will add many generations of history, love and warmth the Chinese can never duplicate. Open your home to real American history, buy antiques.

Beautiful old woods glow with a warmth that is very special. The beauty of antique boxes that have been waxed and tended carefully reflects loving care by many people over the years. Here are some tips for keeping your wood antiques in the best possible condition.

Boxes and other little wood antiques shoud be dusted very lightly with a soft, dry brush or small dust rag. I prefer not to use a dust rag, since loose threads can catch on pieces of veneer or marquetry, pulling them off. Be very careful if you do.

Never use anything that has a rough texture to it it might actually scratch the wood you are trying to preserve. And that means avoid feather dusters too. Broken feathers are like little scratchy sticks that will mar the surface.

Remember to take the dust off the piece entirely. This may sound silly, but a lot of times, when an object has wax on it, you just move the dust around.

Always use a good quality paste wax to wax the wood. I like to use beeswax from Scotland or England. Just apply a little at a time, rubbing softly following th grain of the wood, to build up the deep layered finish your wood deserves. The patina on a wood object or piece of furniture is very important and must be nurtured.

Be very gentle when waxing. If a piece of veneer or inlay comes loose, save it. Such pieces are irreplaceable; substitutes are impossible to find. The pieces should be tucked away in a safe place, than brought to a furniture or wood expert to restore. Don`t attempt to glue them back or to make the repairs yourself.

Many wood antiques have some kind of metal ornamentation brass keyholes or knobs, ormolu, or other decoration. These bits of metal should not be polished with any metal cleaning product. By polishing the metal, you take a chance on damaging the wood underneath. Instead you should just dust them carefully several times a year.

If your house or apartment is especially dry in winter, you should use a humidifier. Wood responds to changes in temperature and humidity. It swells or shrinks and can warp or split. So try to avoid extremes in temperature and make sure that your wood objects do not dry out or become too damp. In the old days, dealers who brought a shipment in from Britain or Europe put their new stock in a warehouse for a year to let it get used to our drier climate. Nowadays, economics preclude this and pieces go right to the showroom, so in most cases a humidifier is a must.

In the case of spills, stains, or serious scratches, I prefer not to use homemade remedies, and instead always call a good wood restored to assess and repair the damage.

Jade, ivory, horn and marble should be lighly dusted with a soft brush or day, soft cloth. Keep these objects out of direct sunlight, since they may dry out and become brittle. Alsways handle these objects with care when moving them.

In the late 1700's fragile reeds were replaced by pine or cedar, were hand carved, and some with hand painted plumage. By the early 1800's carvers created two types of wood decoys floating, and stick up decoys. The floating decoys were waterfowl such as ducks, geese, swans, and the stick up decoys were curlews, peepers and plovers. Stick up decoys were mounted on sticks so the decoy seemed to be standing.

By the mid 1800's, waterfowl demand skyrocketed with the dinning elite at restaurants. With such a great demand, hunters would use 100 400 decoys at a time, and wood decoy carvers emerged by the flock. The demand for these birds became so great that many became extinct. In 1918, the Migratory Bird Treaty was passed with the help of Theodore Roosevelt which ended commercial hunting and limited the amount killed each year.

Hundreds of carvers tried to meet the demand, but some of the most famous were; Albert Laing first attached the body to head with copper nails which wouldn't rust, Harry Shourds one of the most realistic painters, and Anthony Elmer Crowell thought to be the best and most sought after of all the carvers. In the mid to late 19th century, a few factories sprang up to help satisfy the demand for decoys which were made by a reproducing lathe with the heads and tails done by hand.

There are a few ways to help tell if a decoy is a reproduction or not. Contemporary carvers usually painted realistic feathers, but old decoys are usually mostly solid color. This handpainted on wood sign which says ``FRYERS`` used to be painted on both sides, but someone through the years painted over the back. This sign has scratches, dents and dings like all old signs, but this one even has some original crackling of the black letter paint. Thats a bonus. Sign also has 2 holes near top for hanging. Here is a metal sign that I think is so neat, but don`t have any idea what it is for. This is 2 sided but back is in very rusty condition. Front has rust around edges but is in (my opinion) good condition for it`s age and use. Signs are very hot now and rust, holes, scratches doesn`t matter. This wear shows history and that it is a real sign not a reproduction.

One of my most favorite categories of antiques is Enamelware or Graniteware. It depends on who you talk to on what name they call it. I'll just call it Enamelware for this article. I just love the look. Enamelware has been around since the beginning of the 1800's and was made for every purpose imaginable. It is hard to find a perfect piece (unless it is reproduction) since it was used and used often. It was used for cooking, baking, eating, cleaning, bathing, farming, bathrooms, furniture, you name the purpose and they made a piece to use.. Since it was used so often they usually have dents, dings, worn spots, holes, and rust plus a long history behind each piece. Everyone from the wagon train settlers to the more modern homes of the 1800's which actually had stoves and ovens used these very durable relatively inexpensive items.

There were three types of enamelware: Single coat, double coated, triple coated and Porcelain. Triple coated is a very high quality and Porcelain usually was used for kitchen table tops, appliances, and advertising signs. My favorite pieces are the ones that had a hole and it was patched with rivets, metal, glue, putty, or who knows what else. These are called ''make do'' fixes. They made do with what they had. Remember hardware stores were hard to come by and most folks didn't much money.

Enamelware comes in a rainbow of colors with patterns such as speckled, spattered, sponging, swirl, mottled, confetti, relish, chicken wire, checkered, snow on the mountain, feathered, shaded and end of day. You can even get some enamelware (mostly from Europe) that has been decorated with fruit, cows, chickens and lucky collectors can even find cowboy themed pieces. There is large range of prices too. You can find pieces for as low as $1.00 and as high as $4000.00. As with anything the rarer the piece the higher the price, but you can have a wonderful collection and never pay more than $25.00 each.

There is something for every home, taste and color scheme. Enamelware can make a great display in your home since there are so many items you can hang on the wall, sit on shelves and can be used in so many ways. You can use pieces for the reason they were made, or use as flower pots, spooners, straw holders, spare change holder, or place pine cones, glass balls, wood spools, fruit, evergreen pieces, or wood sock darners in them. I like to mix colors, patterns and designs and I'm partial to coffee pots and plates.

Letters are all the rage, especially when they are wood. Here are some wonderful large wood letters at a great price.

This is a great, old, rusty piece of wrought iron which is a half circle. There is some white paint still on it but mostly it is a metal rusty color. This isn`t the really dirty rust that gets on everything, but it is old and wonderful rust. Wrought iron is a very hot decorating item even in the home or office. They can be displayed above fireplace, or as head board. Has great lines and at a great price.

This very old, one of a kind, very used Entrance Sign is handpainted twice. Originally the ``Entrance and the Arrow`` were painted green and sometime much later someone painted red on top of the worn off green. The red is painted very amaturishly. The background paint is bubbled, crackled, scuffed and very worn in many places. Great look. Back of sign is painted with the backround color but with no words.

The barn started out as a small house where Aunt Emma was born, sometime later, a barn was built around it. The barn was blown down during Hurricane Charley so we took the old barn door, made a beautiful table top out of the old Cypress wood, and added Black Walnut pegs. The top was planned down, [only top, underside of door still is original], and was made with breadboard ends. The top was than rubbed with Mineral Spirits, and 3 coats of Bowling Alley wax was applied. The results are fantastic.
The base has a beautiful dark green paint which is rubbing off and has been antiqued for a great look. Has a wonderful antique look.
But wait there`s more. The legs are from about the 1920`s, and are mortise and tenon. Mortise and tenon means a hole was cut through the leg to recieve a projection part of the apron [tenon] through it. Makes it very sturdy.

Great old metal Mason`s root Beer sign has rust on one side, worn marks, scratches and discoloration, but all in all I think is decent shape. Old metal signs always have alot of wear and usually even some bullet holes. This one doesn`t have any bullet holes. The back is green and in good condition. Old metal signs are very collectible and are getting very hard to find. They are featured in all the magazines and decorating books.

This fantastic old Harvest Table is the result of a perfect marriage [sorry we don`t have the marriage license]. The top was destroyed by Hurricane Charley, Jean and Francis, but the base was saved, and in great condition.

This very old pie safe is from Georgia, and has alot of history behind it.
It is in very used condition with lots of great scratches, chipping, and peeling brown paint. The screen is very old, I think original, and has 1 drawer. This old beauty has 2 shelves which are original shelves which have broke into pieces so neat. Top is slanted backwards. I`ve been told that is the way it should be, but for the life of me, can`t figure out why.
I see alot of Pie Safes around, but most are newly made with old wood. If you want an authentic primitive, this one is for you. Think of how many pies have been made, and all the problems and happy times this great piece has seen.

There is a shelf made from plywood (not old) to hold a Tv set. You can take out if you want. There is a hole in back for cords to go through.
Sides of cabinet have 2 panels in them. The drawer and the doors have screws that show from front. They add alot of patina and charm to this great piece.
This is one of my favorite pieces we have in the store.

This came from my own private collection, and is one of my favorites.
The inside is very clean, and refinished too. Don`t have to worry about anything you put in it. Has a very old metal knob to open top.

Metropolitan means Crusade of Mercy was for a Metropolitan area and since I found this around Chicago might be for Chicago area. Banner is reversible with one little hole in one corner. Red is still very vibrant. There are some dirt marks on both sides of white. The marks might come out. I haven`t tried yet. Even with the dirty marks still in good condition. This is a wonderful find. Never saw another one like it. Banner about 6 feet x 44`` wide.

There was a man who heated the rivets up till they were red hot, than he would throw the rivet to a man who would catch the hot rivets with this. The rivet catcher would slide the hot rivet out the bottom and the rivetor would finsh the job. Not much rust, but bottom of the handle is not attached where it meets the metal cone. Really neat. Wonderful shape for it`s age.

This beautiful Oak Square Table is fantastic. It is in very good condition with a few black marks on top that usually come from cigerette burns. They are about 1`` long, but have been there so long that they look like part of the finish. The patina is so great, so warm looking, so homey. Has wonderful large claw feet and two strecher bars on two sides of the table that curve inwards so as not to get in the way of feet. Even the strecher bars have wonderful carvings. This is a deluxe table. It does open but doesn`t have any leaves. Legs are unbeliveable with all the carving.

Just think of all the Sunday meals the table has seen and all the problems and happy times. This is from my own dinning room and is great.

Very old, rusty, fantastic store sign holder is for someone who wants something different. This would be good to hang a sign on it, but would also be great to hang plants off it, or who knows what. It is very rusty. Could spray a light coat of varnish on it or leave in natural condition. Great in garden, Cottage or Shabby Chic home or even office.

Two small side shelves for display and some wonderful storage space. There are 3 drawers, 2 upper and 1 the width of the sideboard. Under the drawers are two cupboard doors with applied carvings and two keyholes. The knobs are wooden matching the piece. The top two drawers are curved to follow the curve in the top of the sideboard. The original beveled mirror is in very good condition.
All in all sideboard is in my opinion very good condition for it`s age and all the use it has received.

This tin has wear marks, and scratches, but is one of the better condition tins I have seen.
Great for tin collector, or just to display on shelf.

This old unique screen door is a real find. It has some yellow paint which is chipping off and has screen on whole door. The top has the screen and also has a heavy metal grid which is very stiff. The screen on bottom is somechat loose and has a few holes in it but not really that bad. The door is so neat just the way it is. Never saw a door with this woven wire grid.

Would look great just leaning against the wall. Such a great look.

Back doesn`t have any paint on it at all just natural wood and door even has a old metal handle still attached.

This wonderful, unique Walnut Stepback Cupboard has very unusual carving on the top and was made about 1840 1870. We have been told it was built as a library piece. This is a true find.

Top has original glass, unusual adjustable shelf design, 2 small side drawers with original hardware. I was also told they sometimes hung the top on the wall. Cupboard is in two pieces.

The bottom has 2 doors which have raised panels. This piece would be great in any room of house or even office. Would look wonderful in foyer. Lots of storage space but with a great look.

``West Haven Redevelopment Agency`` sign is a wonderful handpainted sign which is a must for sign collectors. This sign does have age to it and is painted on the old masonite type board. It does have small wear marks, scratches and dents. The worst part is over the ``M`` where it has a gouge, but all these wear marks just make it more desireable.

Old signs are very collectible and getting very hard to find. Think of all the history that comes with this sign.

Looks like this is some kind of grater. It is made of tin, has lots of bumps on it but does not open. Some of the bumps have holes in them and it has a handle too. I have seen 2 of these now and nobody knows what it is for, why it has holes in it but no way to clean, when it was made.

It is about 11 1/2``L X 2`` diameter.

There is a hole in top and the bottom curls upward and inward and has a hole in bottom too. But with the bottom curling up the hole is about half way up from the bottom. There is usually some wire on the top.

This one is about 6`` high and 4 1/2`` diameter.

Both holes are about 1`` diameter.

This fantastic wood arch (I think) was part of a wood oval. I was told it might be from an old barn. It is amazing how they made this. Most of the paint has been chipped off and is vary old wood, but there is still some old crackled, chipped paint. At closer book it seems someone stripped the arch. It has a great look. There are nail holes, chipped areas, gouges all adding to ``the Look``. Email me and I can send more pictures. Since architectural objects are so hot now, and if you like architectural pieces this is a must.

Would look great in any room on wall with pictures, plates around it or above a door or window.

The paint is very scratched, crackled and is chipping off. There is yellow paint that is coming through around the edges and there is a black line going around the edges. You can`t see much of the black. Maybe it was an old wood highway sign in it`s first life. This is two sided and the back side about same condition as front. This is a great old handpainted sign with much history.

Great smaller wrought iron table and 4 chairs is older and a great size . I think it was painted black and has a perfect piece of glass. This would look great on porch or patio but because of the size great in a breakfeast nook or sunroom. Legs are very curvy and wonderful.

I never saw one this size and with this wonderful leaf viney pattern.
